Doris Behrens studied medicine from 1989-1995 at the Justus-Liebig Universität Giessen and is a mother of three children. She graduated in medicine in 1995 at Wilhelms-University Münster and received her doctorate (Dr. med.) in Pediatrics in 1997. From 1996-98 she started clinical training in neurology. In 1998 and 2000 two of her three children were born. From 2002-2003 she did a special training in neurology at the St. Vincent Hospital Melbourne, Australia and received in 2003 the Certficate IV in English as a second language, Health Profession, Victoria University, Melbourne. From 2004-2006 she continued her clinical training in neurology in Germany until the birth of her third child in July 2006.
